Roberts’s 2017 album “Pangs” offers a characteristically dour and intense collection of contemporary folk songs. The music was composed collaboratively in response to a creative writing project.
- The album was recorded with long-time collaborators including Stevie Jones on bass, Alex Neilson on drums, and Olivia Moore on fiddle. It was produced by Roberts along with the Scottish music producer and engineer Tony Doogan. The album was released on the Drag City label.
- The album features Roberts’s distinctive baritone, singing songs that mine the darker aspects of traditional folk music. "Pangs" was written in the studio over a week, with Roberts and his bandmates building tracks from improvised sketches.
- Roberts drew inspiration from a collection of poems and short stories written by himself and friends, which aimed to capture the feeling of ghosts in everyday life. The album was released in February 2017.
