"Different Light" traded the jangle-pop of their debut for a synthy, new wave-influenced sound, yielding two Top 10 hits. The album reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200.

• The album was produced by David Kahne, who had previously worked with The Knack and Stevie Nicks. It was recorded at various studios in Los Angeles and produced by David Kahne. "Walk Like an Egyptian" reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was the band's biggest hit single.
• "Manic Monday," written by Prince under the pseudonym Christopher, was also a single from the album, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart.
• "Different Light" was certified Platinum by the RIAA for shipping one million units. The album was recorded at The Complex, Rumbo Recorders, and Master Control.

Bangles formed in Los Angeles in 1981, playing jangle-pop that drew from 1960s guitar groups. By 1986, they were a mainstream pop act aiming for a global audience with slicker production.
