- The song was released in January 1961 on the Music Manager label. It reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and number 4 on the UK Singles Chart. The harmonica solo on the track was performed by Delbert McClinton.
- The B-side, "Go Home If You Wanna Go Home," was also written by Channel and McClinton. Channel's debut album, the similarly titled "Hey! Baby," was released later that year.
- "Hey! Baby" became a standard, covered by numerous artists and featured in films. It remains Bruce Channel's signature song.
