Shank's 1961 outing for CM, "New Groove," finds the saxophonist in a decidedly accessible mode, leaning into a relaxed, commercially-minded groove. The album showcases Shank's signature alto tone in a series of polished, mid-tempo numbers.

Alto saxophonist and flutist Bud Shank was a central figure in West Coast cool jazz. In 1961, he was exploring a more mainstream, commercially oriented sound after his earlier work with Modern Jazz Quartet and various Lighthouse All-Stars configurations.
