*Somethin' Else* is a landmark cool jazz recording, notable for its relaxed tempos and Adderley's lyrical alto saxophone, enhanced by the distinctive presence of Miles Davis on cornet.

Julian "Cannonball" Adderley was a definitive alto saxophonist of the 1950s and 60s, known for his soulful, blues-inflected improvisations within the hard bop and soul jazz idioms. In late 1961, Adderley would release *Somethin' Else*, a record that consciously eschewed the then-burgeoning soul jazz sound for a more relaxed, intimate approach, featuring Miles Davis in a rare sideman role.
