Captain Beefheart, born Don Van Vliet, was a singular artist who led his Magic Band through a series of uncompromising, avant-garde rock albums. At the time of this 1974 recording, Beefheart was emerging from the creative nadir of his "Unconditionally Guaranteed" period, seeking to reclaim the experimental spirit of his earlier work.
