"Highway of Love" was a departure from Perkins' earlier rockabilly sound, leaning into a more country-influenced style that would become more prominent in his later work. The single failed to chart, marking a lull in his commercial success following his initial breakthrough.

Carl Perkins was an American singer-songwriter and guitarist, best known for his contributions to rockabilly music in the 1950s. In 1959, he was still a relatively new artist, having achieved his greatest success a few years prior with "Blue Suede Shoes."
