Recorded in Osaka and Tokyo in August 1972, this album captures the Mark II lineup at the height of their powers, midway through a legendary tour. Its release in 1993, however, was controversial, arriving years after the tour and featuring a different lineup.

The 1993 release of "Live in Japan" found the band midway through the "The Battle Rages On..." tour, which would be their last with guitarist Ritchie Blackmore.
