Dio's 2002 album Killing the Dragon reunited the band with guitarist Doug Aldrich, who had last played on the 1992 album Strange Highways. The album features a more classic Dio sound, with powerful vocals and anthemic hard rock tracks.

Dio was the stage name of American heavy metal vocalist Ronald James Padavona. Dio's career spanned five decades, with his distinctive powerful vocals and thematic lyrics making him a defining voice in hard rock and heavy metal. He had previously fronted Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and his own band, Dio, before this release. Killing the Dragon was Dio's tenth studio album, released during a period of renewed interest in traditional heavy metal.
