Some Cities, Doves' third album, eschewed the grand orchestral flourishes of its predecessor for a more direct, guitar-led sound, marking a return to the punchier arrangements of their debut. The LP became their first to reach the Top 10 of the UK Albums Chart.
- Some Cities was recorded at The Dairy Studios in London and mixed at Whitfield Street Studios, with engineers including the prolific Stephen Street. The album's lead single, "Kingdom of Rust," was a notable departure with its more upbeat tempo and prominent synth line. It was later revealed that the album's title track was inspired by a series of photographs of urban landscapes.
- The album reached number 2 on the UK Albums Chart and was certified Gold by the BPI. Doves would later revisit the more expansive sound of The Last Broadcast on subsequent releases.
- "Some Cities" is the only Doves album to date to not feature any B-sides from its singles that were later compiled onto "The Doves by Doves" DVD. Doves returned to Manchester to record their next album, "Kingdom of Rust."
