The title track of this 1971 album features McGriff's signature Hammond B-3 organ sound, but with a deeper funk groove than much of his earlier work.

Organist Jimmy McGriff was a major figure in the soul-jazz and jazz-funk scenes of the 1960s and 70s, known for his bluesy, Hammond B-3 sound. "Black Pearl" arrived as McGriff was exploring more overtly funky material, following his 1969 breakthrough "I've Got a Woman."
