Released in 1988, "In the Spirit of Things" marked a departure from the band's earlier progressive rock sound, leaning more towards adult contemporary and AOR styles. It was their only album released on the Geffen label.
- "In the Spirit of Things" was Kansas's eleventh studio album. The album featured a new lineup, with original members Steve Walsh and Rich Williams being the only holdovers from their most successful 1970s lineups. Production on the album was handled by Michael Franklin and the band.
- The album reached number 124 on the Billboard 200 chart. It produced two singles that charted on the Billboard Hot 100: "All I Wanted" (reached number 54) and "One Big Mistake" (reached number 84).
- The album was the last to feature original drummer Phil Ehart and bassist Dave Hope until their brief return in 1997. It was also the final album with longtime violinist Robby Steinhardt.
