The 1971 LP "Songs of Love and Hate" featured a more austere production than its predecessors, eschewing the lush arrangements of "Songs From a Room" for a starker, more intimate sound. The album's themes were darker and more confrontational, a departure from the more romantic inclinations of his earlier work.

Leonard Cohen was a Canadian singer-songwriter, poet, and novelist. "Songs of Love and Hate" was released during the period following his 1969 debut on Columbia Records, where he had begun to establish his signature baritone and thematic preoccupations.
