1967's "The Explosive Little Richard" featured the artist backed by the English rock band The Grateful Dead, a studio collaboration that uniquely bridged American R&B and the British rock scene. The album also included a new recording of his signature song, "Good Golly, Miss Molly."
- The album was recorded in Hollywood, California, with Richard's longtime bassist Nathaniel Phillips and drummer Gil Parks. The Grateful Dead members Bob Weir and Phil Lesh were present during the sessions and played on the album.
- The album reached number 59 on the Billboard 200 chart. It was the first of two albums Little Richard recorded for Epic Records.
