Recorded in Europe at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios, "Happiness Is the Road" was Marillion's fifteenth studio album. It was released in two editions: a standard CD and a deluxe double-CD version with bonus tracks.
- The album reached number 15 on the UK Albums Chart. It was the first Marillion album to be released on their own Racket Records label. The album was produced by the band alongside Dave Meegan.
- The album's title track was released as a single. It features guest vocals from Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree.
- The album was supported by a world tour in late 2008 and early 2009. The double-disc edition featured a second disc of new material subtitled "The Hardest Way Up".
