5:01 Blues

Epic/NashvilleSee this day
countryblues

A late-career single that found the country legend leaning into bluesy territory.

Merle Haggard was a Bakersfield-sound country singer-songwriter from Oildale, California. He rose to prominence in the late 1960s with a string of hits that often focused on the lives of working-class Americans. "5:01 Blues" arrived late in Haggard's career, after his commercial peak in the 1970s and early 1980s. It found him exploring bluesier territory, a genre he had long incorporated into his country music.
