Aqua Necromancer marked a shift towards a more ambient and abstract sound for Merzbow, moving away from the pure harsh noise of previous works. The album is characterized by its deep, cavernous soundscapes and subtle electronic textures.

Merzbow is the solo project of Japanese noise musician Masami Akita, active since 1979. He is best known for his confrontational, extreme electronic noise recordings. In 1998, Merzbow continued to push the boundaries of harsh noise, exploring more abstract and ambient territories.
