"Death Magnetic" is Metallica's ninth studio album, marking their return to a thrash metal sound after a period of divisive experimentation. The album's raw, unmastered sound and extended song lengths were a notable departure from their previous work.
- "Death Magnetic" was the band's first album to feature new material since 2003's "St. Anger," and the first in 13 years not to be produced by Bob Rock. It was also the first album to feature lead guitarist Kirk Hammett on every track and bassist Robert Trujillo.
- The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling 490,000 copies in its first week. It was initially criticized for its loudness, with many fans and critics complaining about the compressed sound. An unmastered version was later made available for free download.
- The album's title, "Death Magnetic," is a tribute to Metallica's late bassist Cliff Burton and other deceased musicians, as well as people the band members have lost in their lives. The album's cover art, a tombstone with strings, was created by artist DJ Coffman.
Metallica is a Grammy-winning American heavy metal band formed in Los Angeles in 1981. They are one of the most commercially successful and influential bands in the genre.
