This 1966 debut album introduced Neil Diamond's distinctive voice and songwriting to the public. It features many of his early hits, establishing his signature blend of folk and pop.

The album was produced by Jeff Barry. It reached number 91 on the Billboard 200 chart. The album was released on Bang Records before Diamond moved to MCA Records.
The album includes the singles "Solitary Man" and "I'm a Believer", though the latter was a bigger hit for The Monkees. It was recorded in A&R Studios in New York City. The album was later reissued on MCA Records' budget label in 1970.
Neil Diamond wrote all the songs on the album himself. He had previously been a staff songwriter for Coral Records. This album marked his transition from songwriter to recording artist.
