The band's third and final studio album, In Utero, was a deliberately abrasive and challenging counterpoint to the polished commercial success of Nevermind. It found the band returning to a more raw, unvarnished sound.
- The album was recorded in just five days with producer Steve Albini at Pachyderm Studio in Cannon Falls, Minnesota. It was initially controversial for its raw production and lyrical themes, with some executives at Geffen Records reportedly hesitant to release it as is. Despite initial trepidation, the album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart.
- The album's liner notes included a lengthy, cryptic poem by Mary Lou Lord. The original title for the album was supposed to be "I Hate Myself and I Want to Die".
- "Heart-Shaped Box" was released as the lead single, with a music video directed by Anton Corbijn. The album was supported by a world tour in late 1993 and early 1994, which was cut short by Kurt Cobain's death.
