After a decade of sample-heavy production, "Release" saw Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe incorporate a more live, guitar-driven sound into their characteristic synth-pop arrangements.

Pet Shop Boys are a British synth-pop duo formed in London in 1981, best known for their sophisticated, danceable electronic music and often ironic commentary on society. In 2002, they released "Release," their ninth studio album, continuing their prolific output with a more guitar-oriented sound.
