Peter Gabriel's 1985 album "Birdy" features soundtrack work for the film of the same name. It was his first release not to be self-titled and marked a departure from his previous studio albums.
- The album consists of instrumental pieces and re-recordings of songs from his previous albums, with the exception of "Not One of Us" and "Family Snapshot". The soundtrack was primarily composed of existing material, with only a few new pieces. It reached number 1 on the UK Albums Chart.
- Upon its release, "Birdy" reached number 1 on the UK Albums Chart and number 13 on the US Billboard 200. The album was a critical and commercial success, earning a Grammy nomination for Best Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or Television Special.
- Gabriel enlisted the help of guitarist Tony Levin and drummer Jerry Marotta, who had both worked with him on previous albums. The soundtrack was released on Geffen Records in the US and Polydor Records elsewhere.
