A confident, classicist statement from a songwriter hitting his stride, "Unfollow the Rules" found Wainwright sounding more assured and focused than ever.
- The album was recorded at his home studio in Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles. Wainwright stated that he felt he was making a "record" in the traditional sense for the first time in a while. It was co-produced by Wainwright and GRAMMY winner Mitchell Froom.
- "Unfollow the Rules" reached number 18 on the UK Official Album Chart and number 5 on the UK Official Independent Album Breakers Chart. The album was shortlisted for the 2021 Polaris Music Prize.
- The album's release was delayed from April to July due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and Wainwright contracted the virus shortly before its release. He recovered in time to promote the record, albeit remotely.
Rufus Wainwright is a Canadian-American singer-songwriter and pianist, known for his ambitious art pop compositions. At the time of "Unfollow the Rules," he was releasing his eighth studio album, a period marked by a return to more personal songwriting after exploring Shakespearean sonnets.
