A late-career highlight, 'Where There's Smoke…' found Robinson collaborating with the jazz-funk group The Phenix Horns, who had recently finished work with Earth, Wind & Fire. The result was a more rhythmically complex and horn-driven sound for Robinson, a departure from his earlier, more string-laden arrangements.

William "Smokey" Robinson is a legendary singer, songwriter, and producer, known as a founder of Motown Records and for his distinctive falsetto. By 1979, he had established a successful solo career in addition to his extensive work with The Miracles, navigating the evolving sounds of R&B and soul.
