In 1994, Sonic Youth opted for a deliberately lo-fi aesthetic on Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star, releasing the album without any pre-release singles.
- The album was co-produced by Sonic Youth and Paul McKenna. It was recorded at Dreamland Recording Studios in upstate New York. Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star was the band's first album on the Geffen Records label.
- The album debuted at number 169 on the Billboard 200 chart. Melody Maker described the album as "a career-defining moment."
- The album cover art was designed by New York City artist Mark Grotjahn. The band had recently completed a tour supporting the previous album, Dirty.
