This 1999 concept album, released on Merge Records, is a sprawling triple-LP collection of 69 meticulously crafted pop songs about love, presented with wry humor and an undercurrent of melancholy.

Stephin Merritt and his band The Magnetic Fields formed in 1989 in Boston, Massachusetts, and are best known for their witty, melancholic, and often deceptively simple songs. They are also known for Merritt's distinctive baritone voice and for the fact that most of their albums are concept albums. In 2018, The Magnetic Fields released "Quickisn't it Funny How Time Slips Away," a collection of three songs that would later appear on the album "Love at the Bottom of the Sea."
