- The album reached #18 on the Billboard 200 and #3 on the R&B Albums chart. The songs were produced by Norman Whitfield, who had recently taken over as the primary producer for The Supremes. It was recorded in late 1964 and early 1965 at the Motown studios in Detroit.
- The Supremes were coming off of four consecutive #1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100: "Where Did Our Love Go," "Baby Love," "Come See About Me," and "Stop! In the Name of Love." This album was released just weeks before the group's fifth consecutive #1, "Back in My Arms Again."
- The album's liner notes were written by Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr. The repertoire choices reflect the influence of Cooke on the soul and R&B landscape.
