The Else was the first album of new material in four years from They Might Be Giants, and it featured a more polished, rock-oriented sound than their previous work. The album was released on the band's own Idlewild Recordings label.
- The album was produced by Pat DiCenzo, Mark Needham, and John Linnell. It features guest vocals from Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh on "The Other Shoe." The album reached number 18 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart.
