Inspired by Robert Wilson's stage production of the same name, Waits created a Weimar-inflected, theatrical song cycle that eschewed traditional song structures for a more abstract, percussive approach.

Tom Waits is an American singer-songwriter known for his distinctive, gravelly voice and music that blends blues, jazz, folk, and experimental rock. The Black Rider marked a shift in his career, moving away from the more intimate, piano-based sound of his previous work towards a more theatrical and experimental style.
