The first single from the *Pop* album, 'Staring at the Sun' was a Top 5 hit in the UK and Ireland. It was co-produced by Flood and features a distinctive, off-key guitar riff.
- The song was recorded at Hanover Quay in Dublin and the SC.K. studio in Southwick, England. It was released on 1997-04-15 by UMC. The single reached number 1 in Canada and number 2 on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.
- The music video for 'Staring at the Sun' was directed by Stéphane Sednaoui and filmed in Morocco. It features the band members with shaved heads and faces painted in a skull-like motif.
- 'Staring at the Sun' was performed live throughout U2's 1997-1998 PopMart Tour. It was also included on their 2002 compilation album *The Best of 1990–2000*.
