Released in 1989, Built to Last found the Grateful Dead revisiting their roots in a sprawling, eclectic double album that featured a mix of originals and covers. It was their final studio album of new material released during the band's lifetime.

The Grateful Dead were an American rock band formed in 1965 in Palo Alto, California. They are best known for their unique and eclectic style, blending elements of rock, folk, country, jazz, psychedelic rock, and bluegrass, as well as for their extended, improvisation-heavy live performances. In 1989, the Grateful Dead were at a creative and commercial peak, having recently released the hit single "Touch of Grey" and embarking on a series of large-scale stadium tours.
