Roll Call

Blue Note RecordsSee this day

Roll Call, Mobley's second outing for Blue Note in 1961, captures the saxophonist in a relaxed yet focused quintet setting, delivering a set of sophisticated hard bop. The album features a co-led lineup with trumpeter Lee Morgan, which would prove to be a fruitful, albeit brief, collaboration.

Hank Mobley was a prolific jazz tenor saxophonist from Eastman, Georgia, known as the "middleweight champion of the tenor saxophone." In 1961, the same year Roll Call was released, Mobley also recorded Soul Station and Workout, solidifying his reputation as a consistent and reliable force in hard bop.
