"Presto" saw Rush move toward a more concise, direct songwriting style, a notable shift from their earlier extended progressive rock suites. The album was the first to feature their new electronic drum kit, a Roland pad.
- "Presto" was Rush's first album released on Atlantic Records after their long tenure with Mercury Records. The album reached number 16 on the Billboard 200 chart. The cover art, designed by Larry Smith, featured a magician pulling a rabbit out of a hat, a concept suggested by the band.
- The album was produced by the band along with Peter Collins, who had previously worked with them on "Power Windows" and "Hold Your Fire." Stephen Maltby also served as associate producer. Lynne Goldsworthy and Alex Lifeson collaborated on the cover art concept.
- "Presto" was recorded at Le Studio in Morin-Heights, Quebec, and the Metalworks Studios in Mississauga, Ontario. The album was mixed by Bob Rock at the Warehouse Studio in Vancouver, British Columbia.
