Damn the Torpedoes, Petty's third album with the Heartbreakers, arrived in 1979, during a period of peak creativity and commercial success for the band. The album reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200, and its singles "Don't Do Me Like That" and "Refugee" became major hits.
- The album was recorded at Los Angeles's Sound City and MCA Whitney Studios.
- It was the band's first album to be mixed by a producer other than Tom Petty, with Jimmy Iovine and Newport "Seaparl" John Herdman at the helm.
- The album was certified triple platinum by the RIAA in 1989.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are a Gainesville, Florida rock band, fronted by its namesake singer-songwriter. The band was formed in 1976, bringing together members of Mudcrutch, Petty's previous band.
