Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were an American rock band from Gainesville, Florida, led by singer, songwriter and guitarist Tom Petty. They emerged in the late 1970s as part of the new wave movement, achieving mainstream success throughout the 1980s and 1990s. "The Last DJ" was the final album released during Petty's lifetime, coming out late in his career after a period of renewed activity with the Traveling Wilburys and the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers album "Into the Great Wide Open".
